There are a lot of fun things to look at on this page from the July 3, 1963 Lorain Journal of sixty years ago today. Since it was the day before the Fourth, there were a few timely items.
There's an ominous warning by the Police Chief of Avon about the illegal possession of fireworks. Apparently there had been some complaints, including one in which a youngster tossed a lighted firecracker into a car window.
Since July 4th is almost synonymous with the consumption of hot dogs, the 333 Bar and Restaurant was advertising a special foot long hot dog promotion, with a 24 cents price tag. (Too bad it didn't have chili and cheese on it – yum!)
At Chippewa Lake Park, there was going to be a special 2-mile long parade and a performance by the Al Serafini Orchestra.
And over in Grafton, there was the Grafton Firemen's Carnival, with a parade and fireworks. You could also vote for one of 17 pretty 'firebelles' to be crowned Miss Firebelle 1963. (That's Miss Cindy Kirkpatrick, Miss Firebelle 1962 in the ad, holding a highly combustible straw hat.) I like that the ad tells you to "Take Route 57 All the Way," since Grafton is one of those villages that I'm never quite sure where it is.
There were plenty of things to do to have fun, including taking a cruise on the S. S. Erie Queen, which departed from Lorain; seeing a performance of "Pools Paradise" at the Huntington Playhouse; or dropping by the VFW Social Party in the organization's newly remodeled building on East 19th Street.
Elsewhere on the page: an ad for the A&W Root Beer Stand in Lorain on West Erie; a story about foreign exchange students in Avon Lake; a listing of traffic accidents in Lorain; and the St. Joseph Hospital list of discharges and births.
